What exactly is a comfort zone?

Comfort Zone: A place or situation where one feels safe or at ease and without stress.

Easy enough, but what does that really mean? When you really think about it, our comfort zone is a wall, or boundary that we place on ourselves. It is what is familiar, where you feel safe, a psychological bubble that you keep yourself in on a daily basis. Staying inside of your comfort zone for some time is totally normal and it is how we live out lives on a daily basis. If everything we experienced in life was outside of our comfort zone it would probably be too much to handle.

The Drawbacks of being in your comfort zone for too long

The problem is that sometimes we get stuck in our comfort zone. Staying within your comfort zone prevents you from growing as a person, experiencing new things, expanding your consciousness, and escaping your psychological bubble.

Many people live their life inside of their comfort zones because they spend most of their time going to work, school, or raising a family. It is important when you live a very routine life to take a moment to step outside of that routine.

How to know when it’s time to step outside of your comfort zone?

Your life feels stale and stagnant. You feel like you are on a hamster wheel. You are bored with life because you haven’t experienced anything fun, new, or exciting in a long time.

You don’t have passion for anything anymore. This happens to people all the time who get caught up in the daily. This means that it’s time to take a break from the routine and do something wild.

You realize that you say no to a lot of things. *guilty*

This was me. I was getting my hair trimmed and my hairstylist was telling me that she was taking her kids zip lining. I immediately said to her “I would never go ziplining.”

As soon as I left the appointment, I got smacked in the face by a harsh reality. I was getting in the way of a happier, more exciting, adventurous life for myself. It was actually that event that inspired me to write this blog post in the first place.

If you find yourself saying:

  • “I would never eat”
  • “I would never try”
  • “I would never go”
  • “I would never do”

It is definitely time to step outside of your comfort zone. You can also do a little evaluation by asking yourself these questions.

  • When was the last time I tried a new food?
  • When was the last time I tried something that I was scared of?
  • How long have I been in this current routine?
  • Do I have enough excitement in my life?
  • Am I experiencing a lack of adventure lately?

These are some very basic examples of things to ask yourself if you feel like you have been stuck in your comfort bubble for too long. It’s natural to get lost in the routine of things, but as you get older it is important to stimulate your brain in different ways.

How to step outside of your comfort zone.

A daring way to step outside of your comfort zone is to make a list of things you swore you would never do. It might take a while to remember it all, but pay attention to when you watch tv, or your friends and family shared an experience that you immediately swore off in your head. Then, tackle some of the things on the list you made.

If you want to be a little less daring but still get your feet wet with a few things.

  1. Try a new sport or physical activity.
  2. Try a new food.
  3. Wear an outfit you would never wear.
  4. Try something you swore you would never do.
  5. Listen to music you wouldn’t normally listen to.
  6. Face your fears…oh my goodness, this one is tough.
  7. Join a friend in one of their hobbies.
  8. Try a new haircut, color, or style.
  9. Start a new chapter in life.
  10. Do explore something you wanted to do when you were a child.

Here’s another great post with awesome ways to get outside of your comfort zone.

Conclusion:

Stepping outside of your comfort zone will open up a new world of possibilities for you. You will have more fun, learn new things, meet new people, grow exponentially, and escape that feeling of being stuck in a boring routine. Once I started stepping outside of my comfort zone, my life changed for the better.
