How to look elegant at home
Are you guilty of being on the hot mess express? It is a term that I have been hearing a lot in recent years. It mostly refers to women (usually mothers), who have completely abandoned their looks when they are at home. They spend their days with their hair in a messy bun paired with an old t-shirt and sweatpants.
Well, if you are, I’m here to tell you that there is absolutely nothing wrong with being a hot mess express woman. You deserve to be comfortable in your own home.
However, there will come a time in your life where you wish to look more elegant and presentable whilst at home.
In today’s post, I’m covering:
- 5 ways to look elegant at home
- The piece of clothing that will instantly level up your house look.
In case you are in need of some inspiration for how to look more leveled up at home, I am going to be giving you some ideas of what to purchase to effortlessly class up your home wardrobe.
1. Elegant sleepwear
I know that I might be biased when it comes to this topic as I work for a lingerie and sleepwear company, one of the best and easiest places to start when it comes to leveling up is to purchase adorable sleepwear.
There are different types of sleepwear that are suitable for everyone. Don’t go out of your way to purchase a fancy nightgown that you know you won’t ever wear. There are cute sets of sleep dresses, shorts, pants, and more.
Put your focus on finding matching sets that compliment your body and are comfortable. If you do feel like splurging on a fancy sleep set, don’t forget to actually wear it!
I’ve made the mistake before of purchasing fancy sleepwear and then not really wearing it because I didn’t want it to get ruined or because it wasn’t really that comfortable.
Make sure to take time to shop around, try things on and if you find something that is comfortable, see if there are other colors and prints available.
2. Robes
I wasn’t a fan of robes for the longest time. Even seeing them in my store I was never tempted to purchase one. I surprised my daughter with one for her birthday and I realized how luxurious it was. I tried it on and picked up one for myself the next time I went to work.
Robes are cute and cozy. While I don’t recommend wearing a robe all day, They are definitely pretty to wear when you first wake up or when you are getting ready to go somewhere.
I recommend you have at least one feminine silk or satin robe as well as a cozy robe.
3.If you must wear sweatpants…do this
Again, I am not saying there is anything wrong with wearing sweatpants at home. I wear them often. I recommend finding some sweatpants that are comfortable in feminine colors. I recently purchased some gray sweatpants that have little flowers down the sides. This is a very feminine twist on sweatpants that I adore.
4.Yoga pants and a cute top (remember, this is realistic)
I know some elegance creators would say that this is not elegant. But I want to make this realistic. Many women are mothers, students, and hard workers who want to look comfortable at home.
You can find some yoga pants also in feminine colors and prints (I have a few pairs of floral yoga pants that are beautiful). Pair them with a cute top and you look put together.
5.Do your hair and makeup
You will feel much better about yourself if you take the time to get ready even if you aren’t planning on leaving the house. You definitely don’t have to do a full face of makeup, a little bit of mascara and concealer might do the trick.
Make your hair look presentable, it doesn’t have to be something complicated.
The one piece of clothing that will instantly elevate your home wardrobe.
There is one thing you can wear that will make you look extremely elegant at home, but it is rather intimidating to some and to be honest it was intimidating to me at first.
The house dress.
There are women on the internet who devote their time to telling other women to try getting dolled up and wearing a house dress when they are at home.
I saw these women for years and I never took them seriously. I spent my time at home cooking, cleaning, running errands, and doing things that I never wanted to do while wearing a dress.
Until I ordered a dress that I loved, but it didn’t quite fit right. The shipping would have been a lot to return the dress, so I decided to make it a house dress.
I have never felt so feminine in my life.
I felt like a princess.
I spent the day cooking and cleaning in my dress and it wasn’t uncomfortable at all. I felt like a goddess and I never thought I could feel that way from simply wearing a dress. I honestly felt as though I was living in a fairy tale.
Later that week, I purchased several more house dresses. I love them so much! I don’t spend a lot of money on my house dresses, because I know they are more likely to be ruined since I clean and cook in them.
I found affordable house dresses at places like Wal-Mart, Target, and on sale at Hollister. Now that the weather is warming up I am wearing them several days a week. They are becoming part of my normal household wardrobe.
If you are looking to elevate your appearance and be more elegant when you are at home, I suggest following these tips that I’ve shared. Dressing better during the day will make you feel prettier, more feminine and classier.
