Explore an abandoned house with me.
I love abandoned houses. I don’t really know why I am so drawn to exploring them. Perhaps it’s because I like to imaging what life looked like in this house. Or it could be just the excitement of entering the unknown. Either way, I have always loved exploring abandoned places.
Every summer I drive my girls to North Carolina to spend a week on the lake at summer camp. And for 5 years in a row, I have driven past this beautiful abandoned house.
This house is in the middle of nowhere with no other houses around it. It didn’t have any no trespassing signs and I honestly don’t think it even belongs to anyone anymore. Every year I think about what it would be like to explore the house.
This year, I finally did.
I had driven past it and pointed it out to my daughter. I told her that every year I drive by I always want to go inside. Then I realized that there actually has never been anything stopping me. So, I put the car in reverse in the middle of the road (don’t worry there is rarely anyone on these roads) and I parked across the street.
It was daytime, so I wasn’t at all scared about entering the house.
Today, I’ll be sharing some photos with you! I figured why not show my readers some of the random adventures I find myself on.

Before we get started, I do suppose I should make some things clear.
I do not do this often. I used to when I was younger, but a lot of the times there are no trespassing signs posted and clearly it would be illegal for me to enter the property.
I never touch ANYTHING! I simply walk around and take pictures.
I didn’t spend too much time in the house for multiple reasons. 1, I didn’t have the proper shoes. I only had flip flops on. And 2, there were rat droppings on the stairs which made me realize that I probably shouldn’t go all the way up.
The Exterior
I really wish I knew the full history of this house. The exterior is beautiful but I think the fact that it is abandoned makes it more appealing to me. It definitely isn’t a small house. It had two levels but like I said, I didn’t go upstairs.
The entrance to the house wasn’t stable and it was covered in questionable spiders so I had to see if there was a way to enter through the back of the house.

Here’s a view from the side as I walked around the house.

To my surprise there was another little building behind the house! I’m not quite sure what it was used for, but it also had a chimney. This really is a beautiful property. The lake is only 10 minutes away from here and the lot is quite large and it is a very quiet area. I could see how someone could be happy living here.

Getting inside
I wish I took a better photo of the walkway I had to take to get inside, because it was falling apart. I must say that I had to test my weight several times to make sure that I wasn’t going to fall and get hurt. This is a photo from when I had to cross it as I was leaving.
I had to get to the back of the house, climb up and cross some rotted wood in order to get inside.

There was definitely a lot of broken glass and I wish I had better shoes. I had to be very careful walking around.

The Interior
Finally, I made it inside. And it was beautiful! One thing I hate is when people enter abandoned places and trash it with graffiti and trash so I was hoping that it would still be preserved. And it was! I think because this is an area with such a low population that there aren’t many people to destroy the place.

The only thing that I found in the house was a TV that was sitting on the floor near the entrance.

Maybe I didn’t explore enough, but I never found a kitchen in this house. I only saw these two rooms on the lower level. This was quite baffling to me and makes me think that I didn’t explore as much as I could have.
These are the stairs to the upper level, but I didn’t go up there. I didn’t have a good feeling about it. I was happy with seeing just the lower level honestly. I suppose I’ll never know what is up there.

The best thing about being in the house?
The front door kept singing open because of the wind. It made the loudest creaking sound that truly made it seem like we were in a haunted house. It was theatrical and I absolutely loved it!
Here is a view of my car across the street from the front door. I never touched the door, it just stays open like this all the time. You can also get a closer look at why the front wasn’t stable enough for me to enter that way.

I wish I had more to share with you, but I’m afraid I don’t. I also think I might have been a little more adventurous if I didn’t have my daughter with me. She is 17, but I didn’t want she or I to get hurt. Where we were, there is absolutely zero cell service. In fact my phone was in SOS mode the entire time I was inside the house, so the last thing I wanted to do was get hut somehow and not have a way to get help.
Maybe I’m overthinking it, but better safe than sorry.
Final thoughts
This was a fun little spontaneous adventure that I am very happy to have experienced. I love old houses because I enjoy imagining what life was like for the people living in the home. I hope that it was happy, but the reality is likely quite different.
I probably won’t be exploring any abandoned properties any time soon, so I definitely enjoyed it while it lasted. I hope you had fun reading this.
