House Merch: How to Create Custom Souvenirs for Your Home
A few years ago I created a playlist called Cafe Victoria. It is filled with the most beautiful cafe music and I play it often when we are eating dinner. I would often think to myself, what if I had custom dinnerware for my home?
It turns out I was slightly ahead of my time, because I am discovering that the ladies on social media are making house merch an actual thing.
What if your house had its own merch? Not your favorite restaurant. Not a hotel you stayed at on vacation. Your actual house.
A postcard with your family name on it. A little matchbook with your house logo. A tote bag that says The [Last Name] House. A coaster with your address and the year you moved in. Maybe even a family crest.
It sounds slightly ridiculous—and that is exactly what makes it so charming.
House merch is a growing hosting trend where people create customized souvenirs for their homes and give them to friends and family who visit. Think of it as the souvenir shop at your favorite little hotel, except the destination is your living room. Current examples include postcards, pens, stickers, matchbooks, coasters, magnets, totes, and other personalized keepsakes.
And honestly, I love the idea.
One of my favorite ways to make life feel more magical is to stop treating ordinary things like they’re ordinary. Your Saturday morning can become a ritual. Your neighborhood can become a little world. Your dinner party can feel like an occasion.
And now your house can have merch.
The best part is that you don’t have to go all-out. There are a few simple steps to creating your own house merch, and once you establish the basic identity of your home, you can create as much—or as little—merchandise as you want.
Step 1: Name Your House
Before you can create house merch, you need a house name.
This is the fun part.
Your house doesn’t necessarily need to have some grand historic name like Rosewood Manor. In fact, a simple or slightly silly name can be even more charming.
You could name your home after your family:
- The Smith House
- The Johnson House
- Casa Williams
- The Wilson Residence
- Maison Miller
You could use your street name:
- Maple Street House
- The House on Oak
- Willow Lane
- Elm Street Cottage
You could name it after the physical characteristics of your house:
- The Little Pink House
- The Blue House
- The Brick House
- The Cottage
- The Garden House
Or you could give it a more whimsical name:
- The Daydream House
- The Honey House
- The Rose House
- The Little Inn
- The Sunday House
- The Wildflower House
- The Cozy House
- The House of Good Things
You can also incorporate the year you moved in. The Miller House, Est. 2019 immediately makes the whole thing feel like an established little institution.
When choosing a name, think about what you want your home to feel like. Is it cozy? Traditional? Whimsical? Glamorous? Casual? Family-oriented? A place where everyone gathers?
The name should feel like something you would actually enjoy seeing printed on a postcard.
And don’t overthink it. The charm comes partly from the fact that you’re treating your completely normal home like it has a gift shop.
Step 2: Create a Logo for Your House
Now that you have a name, you need a visual identity.
This doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, the simpler it is, the more versatile it will be.
You might create a logo that simply says:
THE WILLIAMS HOUSE
Est. 2018
Or you could incorporate an illustration of your home, a flower from your garden, your initials, a little house drawing, or another symbol that represents your family.
There are several ways to do this.
Make one yourself in Canva
If you’re comfortable with Canva, this is probably the easiest option. Start with a simple wordmark, choose two fonts you love, add a small illustration or symbol, and experiment until you have something that feels like your house.
You don’t need to be a graphic designer. A beautiful serif font and a tiny line drawing can be enough.
Hire someone on Etsy
If you want something more professional, search Etsy for custom logos, family crests, house logos, or family branding.
You can give the designer your house name, colors, aesthetic, family details, and inspiration and have them create something specifically for you.
Create a family crest
You could also go the traditional route and create a family crest.
This could be completely fictional and designed around your family rather than representing an actual historical coat of arms. Think about symbols that represent your household: flowers, animals, books, stars, your favorite colors, hobbies, or meaningful places.
You could design one yourself or commission an artist to create one for you.
The important thing is to create one recognizable visual identity that you can reuse across everything.
Once you have your house name and logo, the fun really begins.
15 House Merch Ideas to Give Your Guests
You don’t need to make all fifteen of these. Start with one or two things you genuinely love and build your collection over time.
1. Custom Postcards
This is probably the easiest place to start.
Create a postcard featuring your house name, logo, address, or an illustration of your home.
You could make the front say:
I VISITED THE WILLIAMS HOUSE
AND ALL I GOT WAS THIS POSTCARD.
Or keep it sentimental:
Greetings from the Williams House
So glad you came.
Guests can take them home, display them, or even mail them to someone else.
2. Personalized Pens
There is something wonderfully old-fashioned about a personalized house pen. Put your family name, house name, or logo on a simple pen and keep a little cup of them near your entryway. Your guests can take one home when they leave.
3. Custom Matchbooks
Matchbooks instantly give your home restaurant or boutique-hotel energy.
Put your house name on the front and your logo on the back.
You could even include:
THE WILLIAMS HOUSE
Dinner • Drinks • Good Company
They are especially cute for dinner parties.
4. Cocktail Napkins
Order cocktail napkins with your house name or monogram.
These don’t even have to leave the house. They can become part of your signature hosting aesthetic, and guests can take a few home after an especially memorable gathering.
5. Custom Coasters
Create coasters featuring your logo, family crest, house illustration, or address.
You could have one made for everyday use and another seasonal version for Christmas, summer parties, or Halloween.
6. Stickers
Stickers are inexpensive and ridiculously fun.
Create a few different designs featuring your house name, crest, a drawing of your home, or an inside joke your friends will understand.
Put them in a little dish and let guests choose one.
7. Magnets
Turn your house into a tiny refrigerator souvenir.
A custom illustration of your home with the house name underneath would be adorable.
It’s also the sort of thing guests are likely to actually keep.
8. Tote Bags
This is where house merch starts becoming gloriously excessive.
Imagine your friend leaving your dinner party carrying a canvas tote that says:
THE GORGEOUS WILLIAMS HOUSE
It is basically free advertising for your imaginary boutique hotel.
Totes would be particularly fun for major events, family reunions, milestone birthdays, or housewarming parties.
9. Custom Notepads
Create a little notepad with your house logo at the top.
You could put it in your guest room for overnight visitors or give individual ones to guests.
It would also be adorable with a phrase like:
Notes from the Williams House
10. Bookmarks
If your household loves books, make a bookmark.
Put your house name on one side and a little illustration or family crest on the other.
This is especially cute if you frequently have friends over for book clubs or reading nights.
11. Koozies
For summer gatherings, backyard parties, lake weekends, or barbecues, custom drink koozies are perfect.
Put your house name on them and give them to guests as they arrive.
By the end of the night, everyone has unofficially joined the club.
12. Mini Candles
Create a signature house candle.
You could give it a name like The Williams House, Sunday at Home, or The Garden Room.
Choose a scent that reminds you of your house and use the same label every time.
Suddenly your home has its own signature fragrance.
13. Recipe Cards
This one is especially sweet.
Create recipe cards featuring a family recipe and your house logo.
Give guests your famous chocolate chip cookie recipe, your holiday punch, your grandmother’s soup recipe, or whatever everyone always asks you to make.
Now your house merch is also a little piece of family history.
14. Custom Keychains
Make a tiny keychain featuring your house name, initials, address, or a miniature version of your house.
This would make an especially cute housewarming or holiday gift for family members.
15. A Little Guest Goodie Bag
And if you want to go completely overboard—in the best possible way—create a tiny house gift shop bag.
Put together a postcard, sticker, pen, matchbook, bookmark, piece of candy, and maybe a little candle.
Give it to overnight guests when they leave.
Congratulations. Your house now has a gift shop.
You can also make house merch for yourself…
There are also ways to create house merch for yourself as well. It doesn’t always have to be for the guests. With some custom stickers and a custom stamp, there are endless possibilities for what you can create. I found all of these ideas on social media and I thought they were incredibly chic.
You Can Make It as Simple or Elaborate as You Want
The beauty of house merch is that there isn’t really a right way to do it.
You don’t need twenty different products.
You could have one house name and one postcard.
You could create a beautiful family crest and put it on everything.
You could have seasonal merch that changes throughout the year.
You could make special versions for holidays, birthdays, dinner parties, or family reunions.
You could even create a little house archive over the years, collecting postcards and designs from different stages of your family’s life.
And because many of these items can be designed or ordered in small quantities, you don’t have to turn your home into an actual retail operation. Current house-merch examples specifically point to accessible tools such as Canva and print-on-demand services as ways to make personalized items without being a professional designer.
The goal isn’t to make your house look like a corporation.
The goal is to make your home feel like a world.
Make Your House a Place People Remember
I think that’s what makes house merch so charming.
It’s technically just a postcard. Or a pen. Or a coaster.
But it’s also a little reminder that someone was there.
They came over for dinner. They stayed for the weekend. You sat around the kitchen table talking until midnight. You celebrated someone’s birthday. You drank wine on the porch. You made pancakes the next morning.
And now they get to take a tiny piece of that memory home.
We tend to think of souvenirs as something you buy when you travel somewhere special. But why does a beautiful memory have to happen somewhere else?
Your home can be a destination.
Your kitchen can be the restaurant everyone loves.
Your backyard can be the summer hangout.
Your guest room can feel like a tiny boutique hotel.
Your family traditions can become their own little rituals.
And your house can have merch.
So give your home a name. Make a little logo. Design a postcard. Put your family crest on a coaster. Create a ridiculous tote bag. Leave a stack of them by the door.
Because sometimes the easiest way to make your life feel more magical is to stop waiting for something extraordinary to happen—and start treating the ordinary things you already have as if they’re special.
Your house isn’t just where you live. It can be its own little world.
