Visiting the Sunflower Field
Picking Sunflowers
One of the last things on my Summer to do list was Sunflower picking. I was really hoping to make it to the Sunflower farm this year. Last year I didn’t want to go because the very first time I went, it the heat was excruciating and I was extremely uncomfortable. However, I know it makes me happy and my girls love picking sunflowers so I forced myself to do it.
This year has been super tricky because we have had more rain here in Virginia than we’ve ever had. We had periods where it rained non stop for almost a week. So much rain that a lot of the flower fields were damaged. This made greatly impacted the flowers at farms everywhere. They were unable to grow as many acres as they previously did, and the blooming season was a lot shorter than it was in previous years.
Luckily for me, I was able to make it in time to pick some gorgeous sunflowers of all different sizes and colors. Actually, my girls did most of the picking. I think I only picked one flower for myself.

We went last Thursday. It is beginning to cool down in the mornings here, as summer is coming to an end (thank goodness) So I basically went there as soon as I got out of bed. You see, the closest sunflower farm is about 45 minutes away from my house. It was a beautiful drive, to be honest.
When we got there, I’m not going to lie, I was pretty disappointed. The last time we went in 2016, there were SO many sunflowers. Acres and Acres of them. I was honestly overwhelmed by them. That’s what makes me happy. Drowning in a field of flowers is what brings me joy and peace. So when I arrived at the farm and saw the absolute smallest little patch of flowers I was so sad. What was different though, is that there were lots of different colors! I have never picked any red or orange sunflowers before, but I was able to and they were so pretty!
There was also another small field of cosmos and zinnias for us to pick as well. My girls picked a bunch of flowers of all shapes, colors, and sizes. They had so much fun! But by the time we were done it was starting to get super hot. And you guys, I really don’t like the heat. It makes me uncomfortable and puts me in a bad. But luckily we were done and it was time to go home! I definitely will be going back next year, but I hope that we get more flowers because giant sunflower fields really do make me happy.
Have you gone flower picking yet this summer? You still have time! Go while you can, it’s so much fun!
